Almost a million square metres of road will be resealed across the city by early next year, as part of a $6 million maintenance drive, Chief Minister and Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Jon Stanhope, said today.

The program will involve arterial roads, main urban roads and municipal streets, making the road network safer and improving the amenity of the city.

“This work, which will involve the re-sealing of about 880,000 square metres of roadway over the next few months, represents a major investment in the safety and proactive maintenance of the ACT’s road network,” Mr Stanhope said.

“Works on the northside will be completed by January 2009, with works on the southside starting in the new year,” Mr Stanhope said.

The major roads to be resealed, and their timing, subject to weather, are:

  • Coulter Drive, several sections – December 2008
  • Ginninderra Drive, several sections – December 2008
  • Southern Cross Drive, several sections – December 2008
  • William Hovel Drive, several sections – December 2008
  • Hindmarsh Drive, several sections in Weston Creek – January 2009
  • Lady Denman Drive, Cotter Road to Scrivener Dam – January 2009
  • Drakeford Drive, Summerland Circuit to Athllon Drive – February 2009
  • Canberra Avenue, National Circuit to Manuka Circle – February 2009

Selected suburban streets will be resealed in Braddon, Ainslie, Cook, Downer and Lyneham (on the northside) and Gilmore, Gordon, Holder, Hughes, Isabella Plains, Richardson and Waramanga (on the southside).

Mr Stanhope said local communities would be well informed about roadworks in their area, with prominent signs and letterboxed notices about expected delays and closures.

Work will be carried out during off-peak times to minimise the impact on the community.
