On Saturday the 13th of December 2008 over 1000 people comprising: riders, pillions and on-lookers came together for the annual Motorcyclists Toy Run.
The Master of Ceremonies (MC) Peter (Pete) Major said “the weather kept the number of bikes down to about 800 a couple of hundred short of last year’s record, however the response in cash and gifts set a new benchmark with almost $6,000 being raised for St John’s Care and an equivalent amount of gifts for the Salvation Army”.
Pete said the VIPS really got into the swing of the Run with MLA’s Brendan Smyth and Meredith Hunter forming a powerful coalition to outbid a concerted ALP effort by MLA’s Joy Burch and Mary Porter in the charity auction with a bid of $350 and then donating the prize back to be resold. As a great gesture the Canberra Riders donated their bid to the collection for St John’s Care.
The Ulysses Canberra Branch again took out the trophy for Club with the largest attendance and then presented a donation of over $1,200 to St John’s Care which the club had been collecting over the proceeding 12 months.
The MRA ACT wishes to extend is sincere thanks and appreciation to all the riders, pillions and onlookers that made the day great and a round of applause for our VIP’s and Sponsors that add the icing on a beautiful Christmas cake that the entire community can enjoy.
